Katatonia – Night Is the New Day

Few would disagree that Sweden’s Katatonia have matured with each studio release, since forming in Stockholm way back in 1991.

Their latest work ‘Night is The New Day’ sees them surpass the brilliance of their previous work, and seventh album ‘The Great Cold Distance’.

From the plummeting thunder of opening track ‘Forsaker’ the Swedes have constructed arguably their best offering to date.  Each member is on splendid form, with immaculate stick work from Daniel Liljekvist, and evocative vocals by Jonas Renkse.

‘Onward into Battle’s unhurried procession, paired with the brilliant ‘Liberation’ accompanies each other perfectly in the first half of the record.

Later the ferocious stomp of ‘Day and Then the Shade’ with its swirling backing guitar leaves the listener, imploring for more.

Once again, Katatonia have taken their rightful place, at the head of the table.
